The only writing system to develop in the Pacific Islands / Australia was rongorongo in Rapa Nui (Easter Island). Scholars aren't really sure when it developed; some say it developed after contact with the Spanish in, but it was probably a few centuries older. Its use had ceased by the mid-1800s though.
Please provide a time line for the development of written language. Is there consensus among scholars regarding the first? I assume that the first are Egyptian hieroglyphics or Iraqi cuneiform or some form originating in China. Also, which were the earliest written languages in N. and S. America, in the Pacific islands, in Australia? Thanks, Tom
